Did you notice that there is a slogan which says " Express Yourself. Start a Blog"? This means that you can sign up here for starting your FREE blog. Wow! This is a great news.

Let’s explore now what do we get if we sign up for a free blog here.

wordpress.com features Explore Wordpress Part 1

You get all the main features of a blog like the following:

  • You blog will be hosted by wordpress. So this means that you don’t have to worry about the hosting fees or any other technical issues.
  • The main limitation will be your URL name will be in this format only i.e. http://You.Wordpress.com/ – this means you can put anything in the place of ‘You’. So if you want a blog to talk about Brittany Spears, then you have to try to see what names are available in the place of ‘You’. Let’s say you wanted the name to look like www.BrittanySpearsSpecial.com but it will look like www.BrittanySpearsSpecial.Wordpress.com. Not bad because you are getting the whole deal for free by just accommodating the word ‘wordpress’.
  • You get numerous attractive themes to choose from.
  • You get integrated stats system. This means that this system will provide you features like how many people visited your blog and where they came from. This is a very important feature which comes for free.
  • You don’t have to worry about the spam too. Wordpess uses Akismet which blocks spammers from leaving comments on your blog.
  • There is a great support forum available if you need any help.
  • Now don’t underestimate the power of these free blogs. If you think that this is only for hobbist, then think again. Here are some examples of the free blogs being used by known organizations and celebrities i.e. CNN’s political ticker blog, Flickr blog, Second Life blog, and many more.
  • If you have been already blogging on some other platforms like blogger, LiveJournal, Movable Type, TypePad or another such platform, then you can import all the content from your existing blog to this new free blogging platform.
  • You can blog in 50 languages. Isn’t it a nice feature?
  • Don’t forget the great wordpress community which supports each other well.

So where wordpress.com gets its’ revenue from to support these great free blogs. Their model is that as your blog gets popular, they will run few google ads on your blog to recover the cost. But if you don’t want these google ads, then you have to pay a monthly low fee to remove these ads. I think this is very fair. When you are starting new, you may be running on a very tight budget. So use this service while you are not earning. Once you start making money, then you should switch over to their premium service without the ads.

Now you might have heard about the Wordpress.org. What is this service and how this is different from WordPress.com.
